Uni area target of knife attacks

Maroubra police are increasing patrols around the Kingsford area, after two men were attacked with knives last week.

It is thought these robbery-related offences are on the rise because of the large number of foreign university students living in the area.

A 33-year-old man from Rosebery was slashed in the face as he walked to his car in Gardeners Lane at 9.40 pm on Tuesday.

The man was approached by two men wearing baseball caps, one of whom produced a knife and demanded the victim's wallet.

The men forced the victim to the ground and slashed him in his right cheek before stealing his wallet, mobile phone and personal organiser. The men also smashed the windscreen of the victim's car.

On the following Thursday night at 12.45 am, two men were walking near the McDonald's restaurant along Middle Lane, Kingsford, when a white van stopped next to them. Witnesses told police that two men of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance got out of the van and began yelling at the men.

One of the men produced a knife and slashed one of the victims, an 18-year-old male, in the throat, before fleeing in the van.


"Without going into any particular culture, I think the fact that there are a large number of potential victims in that area makes it a target for offenders, as you will no doubt find in other commands with universities," [Eastern Beaches crime manager Detective Inspector Joe Cassar] said. "There are greater opportunitiesand it will often result in a greater increase in that type of crime."

May 13:
A group of males is bashed and assaulted by three men carrying a machete in Harbourne Road, Kingsford.

June 7:
A man is bashed and robbed in Lorne Avenue, Kensington. He receives head fractures, cuts and bruising.

July 18:
Two men stab a 33-year-old Rosebery man as he returns to his vehicle in Gardeners Lane in Kingsford.

July 20:
An 18-year-old man has his throat slashed with a knife while walking in Middle Lane, Kingsford.
